What the Payette National Forest actually allows for dispersed camping — how far off a road you may drive, which roads that applies to, and the closure orders that override it. Every figure below is sourced; the primary documents are linked at the bottom.

The corridor applies ONLY where the map carries the dispersed-camping symbol (usually dots beside the road line). An unmarked open road is not a camping corridor, and this is the rule most often misread.
Route-specific dot system on the 2026 MVUM: 'This symbol is used along with a designated road or trail to indicate limited off-road motor vehicle use for the purpose of dispersed camping. The dots indicate where this activity is permitted... For the Payette National Forest, this use is permitted for up to 300 ft. from the centerline of roads and up to 100 ft. from the centerline of motorized trails.' The map lists roads where dispersed camping is allowed ('all or portions of the following roads') — not a blanket allowance on every open route. Underlying district travel decisions (e.g., Weiser RD ROD, Jan 2008) framed 300/100 ft as policy for dispersed camping only; motorized big-game retrieval off routes is prohibited.
On the Payette 2026 MVUM, 'Special Designations' means trails open to vehicles 70 inches or less in width (a vehicle-class designation). Motorized dispersed camping uses the separate dot symbol; no game-retrieval designation exists.
Lost Valley closure, Order 0412-615 (eff. 2025-03-26, New Meadows RD, threatened-species habitat) — printed on the 2026 MVUM: area within 300 ft of NFS Road 089 closed to motorized travel and camping from Slaughter Gulch to Cold Springs. Big Flat Campground area closure 0412-625 (2025-06-10, post-fire hazards). Chamberlain airstrip camping restriction 0412-621 (2025-08-01, Frank Church wilderness).
Stay-limit order 0412-569 verified verbatim from the forest alert page (signed 2022-05-16 by Forest Supervisor Linda Jackson, in effect through 2027-05-31): 'Camping within the same five-mile radius for more than 14 days in any 30 consecutive days' prohibited on all Payette NFS lands except the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness (separate order 01/04-00-00-21-02); superseded a 1993 18-day order. Water setback: no enforceable order found — forest alerts list and orders 0412-569/0412-570 checked ('no rule found', not verified-permitted).
