What the Kootenai National Forest actually allows for dispersed camping — how far off a road you may drive, which roads that applies to, and the closure orders that override it. Every figure below is sourced; the primary documents are linked at the bottom.

The corridor applies to the whole designated road system, minus the exceptions the MVUM prints. This is the most permissive pattern.
Blanket rule on all designated open routes: 'Motor vehicle use off of designated roads and/or trails for the purpose of dispersed camping is permitted on National Forest Lands for up to 300 feet from the centerline of the road and/or trail' (verified verbatim on the Cabinet RD MVUM, Libby RD North Half MVUM (Oct 1, 2019), and Rexford/Fortine MVUM). Campsite selection must be completed by non-motorized means, then accessed by the most direct route without causing resource damage (36 CFR 261.15); moving/going around/past barriers prohibited (261.12); no motorized access off designated roads in developed recreation sites (261.16(m)). Motor vehicles may be parked up to 30 feet from the edge of the road surface.
Kootenai MVUMs have no dispersed-camping special designation symbol. 'Seasonal and Special Vehicle Designations' tables list per-route seasonal dates and vehicle-class variations only.
NCDE Food/Wildlife Attractant Storage Order R1-2023-02 covers ALL Kootenai NFS lands (Mar 1-Dec 31 annually through 2028) - grizzly bear attractant storage required forest-wide. Summer 2026 area closures relevant to camping: Rexford Bench Beach Area temporary closure on Lake Koocanusa (Order 01-14-01-26-10, eff. Jul 10, 2026); Ross Creek Cedars Road closure/storm damage (01-14-04-26-08); Timberlane Campground closure (01-14-05-26-03); lingering flood-event inaccessible areas from the Dec 2025 Kootenai flood.
Corridor text read from three district MVUMs (Cabinet, Libby North Half dated OCT 1, 2019, Rexford/Fortine) - identical wording; these are the oldest MVUMs among the MT forests checked, so check for newer editions before publishing. Stay limit: Kootenai camping-cabins page states 16 consecutive days / 32 cumulative days per calendar year for Montana NFs; enforceable basis is Regional Order R1-2025-01 (36 CFR 261.58(a), signed Jul 17, 2025, eff. Aug 1, 2025-Jul 31, 2030; site = 1/2-mile radius). Water setback: '100 feet from water' claims appear only on third-party aggregator sites; NO enforceable water-setback order found on the forest's alerts page or MVUM legends - treat as no rule found, not verified-no-restriction.
